MAASIN CITY — A considerable turn out in the renewal of licenses of loose firearms were noted in just over the first week of October, Provincial Director Senior Supt. Pepito Padaca reported in an interview with PIA today.

As of this writing, there are already 130 loose and unregistered firearms whose registration were renewed at the provincial PNP headquarters particularly at the Firearms and Explosives Division, PD Pacada added.

He disclosed that several identified 442 unrenewed firearms have started to register this early. He expects a high yield of registration both for the loose and unregistered firearms in response to the amnesty program.

Their office also made proper information campaign especially those identified firearm owners to avail of the gun amnesty program during the period from October 1–30 this year.

He further said PNP is implementing the gun amnesty program months ahead of the campaign period in preparation for the holding of a peaceful and safe 2010 national elections to include the province of Southern Leyte.

He reacted on the report that the province has more than 3,000 loose firearms saying it is a theoretical estimate. However, he is bent to make an inventory of the presence of loose firearms in the province to include a close coordination with those local government units, who once applied for registration of firearms to augment their local police stations artillery.

On the other hand, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Ronaldo Puno said guns not registered or gun licenses not renewed after October this year will be confiscated. He added that he seeks to make illegal possession of firearms a non-bailable offence before Congress in order to curb the proliferation of loose firearms in the country.

An estimated 1.1 million loose firearms have been recorded in the country, half of which are guns not properly registered and without complete documents, while the other half belongs to different classification categories.
