Southern Leyte Rep. Roger Mercado, Gov. Damian Mercado and city officials lead by Mayor Malone Samaco pose before the Comelec officials after City officials file their COCs. Mercado proceeded to the Comelec provincial office to file his reelection bid.
Maasin City (29 November) — Incumbent City officials here led by Mayor Maloney Samaco trooped to the office of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) this morning to personally submit their certificates of candidacies (COCs) and thus be officially recognized as candidates seeking re-election for the May 10, 2010 synchronized and computerized local and national elections.
Out of the ten members of the city council, all eight of them were up for re-election, including Vice-Mayor Effie Abiera Sabandal, and the new entrant is lawyer Romeo Geniston, previously connected with the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) but lately was on private practice.
The tenth slot was still left open due to party considerations — Samaco’s complete slate is under Lakas-Kampi-CMD party — and this will be known only until the last day of filing, and on the actual filing itself, on Tuesday, December 1.
After hearing Mass at the Cathedral here, the COC-filing-bound officials, sporting red shirts punctuated by a white color near the neck, walked straight to the City Comelec office, which is just about a little over a hundred meters from the church, to hand-in their papers to a waiting City Election Officer Lawrence Gelsano.
They were accompanied by partymates Gov. Damian Mercado and his brother, Cong. Roger Mercado, their immediate families, and several barangay officials and close allies. They reached the Comelec office by around 8:15 in the morning.
Having done some brief procedural matters and much picture-taking, the entourage proceeded to the provincial Comelec office, this time for Cong. Roger Mercado to file his certificate of candidacy for the same lone congressional office.
Gov. Damian Mercado, along with Lakas’ complete slate of provincial officials will file their respective COCs on deadline, Tuesday, December 1, yet, it was learned.
The eight incumbent city officials who are due for re-election included Nestor Sy, Antonio Cardoza, Atty. Cromwell Gerong, Atty. Marga Bantug, Alejandro Roxas, Vivencio Costillas, and Rene Hatayna.
The other two councilors, Conrado Galeon and Essie Espina Garvez, were already on their last term.
Meanwhile, City Comelec records showed two other candidates for councilor, running as independents, had submitted their certificates of candidacy last November 24. They were Ramil Laraga, from barangay Sto. Nino, and Ponciano Panilawon, from barangay Mambajao this city.
At the provincial Comelec, an independent candidate for provincial board had registered in the person of Gaspar Tagalo, a one-time OIC Governor in the 1980s following the EDSA revolution. (PIA-Southern Leyte)

…hu, hu, hu.

@ jani:
kindly put back the nice post of @nangandoy and @maasin sentinnel
thanks
@ Jani:
I concur with @teardropsfall’s request to reinstall the banters of @Maasin Sentinel and @nangandoy. I was able to read them, and in my opinion, although Maasin Sentinel’s post was somewhat inflamatory, it is still a valid offering of credible enlightenment to our beloved people of Southern Leyte. You know as well as I do that corruption, beyond any reasonable doubt, is ongoing among the professional politicians. I’d like to ask you to uphold your media’s motto, “fair, fearless and independent” as we continue to stand by you with your journalistic aspirations and convictions.
Not trying to get off on a tangent, but despite the odds that I face here everyday wherever I am at (Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Kuwait, etc.), I never falter to continuously think of our beloved Southern Leyte and her poor citizenry who’s trying so hard to aspire for better lives while wallowed in the quagmire of political oppression and economic suppression. In all sheer honesty, I admit that I am not proud of taking down lives of those who want us and the rest of the Christian infidels dead, but I compell myself to do it for the sake of freedom from tyranny for all humankind. When The Reporter Online came about, I began to believe that you are up to a battle in constanly weighing for the difference that would be beneficial for the common good of our people. Your faltering from this media’s motto by instilling a biased censorship on commentaries would only convey a mixed signal to your supporters about your standings against corruption of our existing politicos. You know as well as I do that the purposefullness and effectiveness of this media is only as good as its supporting patrons who also happen to be from different political factions.
I hope that you’d reconsider reinstalling the two commentaries that you just deleted, but perhaps with a precautionary note of admonition to Maasin Sentinel.
@Maasin Sentinel:
I highly recommend to be mindful of the strength of your postings most especially when it encroaches on issues that could be construed as slanderous. However, if the facts that you claim to be in your posession are impeccably credible allegations beyond any reasonable doubt, then perhaps the services of the Ombudsman have been way overdue for you. To my understanding, the Ombudsman does not only provide physical security but also protect the identity of those who are in danger of retaliation or repercussions from political perpetrators.
