MAASIN CITY – Its going to be a second face-off of top positions of the province of Southern Leyte as former Rep. Aniceto Saludo, Marissa Lerias and former Gov. Rosette Lerias filed their CoCs on the last day of filing for representative, governor and city mayor respectively.

Saludo filed his candidacy for the lone district thru a representative at 2:10 p.m. under PMP, Lerias at 3:50 p.m. thru lawyer Manuel Enage, Jr and Rosette Lerias at 3:33 p.m. on December 1.

The Leriases’, who filed their CoCs under NPC banner, have no running mates. Their camps have accused the Mercado’s of cheating in the 2007 elections but did not file a formal protest with the Comelec.

Mercado’s running mate is incumbent Vice. Gov. Miguel Maamo II while his board members are incumbents Cesar Rey, Atty. Teopisto Rojas, Albert Esclamado and third termer Tomas Oppus mayor Felicula Escaño for the first district.

Incumbents Daisy Gamale, Florentino Fernandez, Roberto Lagumbay and new comer Atty. Abelardo Almario.

For the opposition’s first district board members Atty. Eva Tomol, Engr. Rito Go, Dr. Iñigo Costillas and for the second district, Santi Santiago, Apolinio Animas, Jessie Labao and Arnel de la Peña.

Thanks for your comment: “You are right on how the northwest are trying to be more earth friendly environment, but Ironic to say, Cancer is the number one cause of death in Portland, OR.”

Our sincere sympathy to your very high rate of cancer victims. We have learned from the TV documentary programs and online articles which reported that one top cause of cancer is the air and environmental pollutions. One of our sponsors used to live and work for 17 years in 3 suburbs of Los Angeles and 2 years in Chicago. He knew how difficult it can be breathing the air for 9 to 10 months of the year in Los Angeles. The Santa Ana winds coming from the foothills several miles northeast of Los Angeles and going to the Pacific Ocean were the only factor which reduced the smog and pollution. He experienced pain in his lungs and had coughed frequently for 17 years which led him to resign and relocate to other less polluted cities in the U.S.

The smog and pollution have caused the deaths of hundreds of the bus and jeepney drivers in Metro Manila which was reported in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. You can also check this report by just searching Google, Yahoo and other top search engines.

I enjoyed reading the comments on the first page under this article until… 7th Millennium’s ranting came up! Immediately thereafter, I became challenged to write down mine in response to his misplaced ranting.

Where the hell do you get off accusing others of being gossipers or self-proclaimed reporters. Just because you claimed to have attained some form of journalism ethics doesn’t necessarily mean that you can just demean anyone below your own supposedly self-proclaimed standards.

Mr. Samuel Mercado, you must NOT forget that the people who are expressing their suspicions and assumptions are legitimate voters who may have been very disappointed of the public-servant performance of the Mercado brothers – your infamous relatives, I might add! They have the right to gripe about the politicos as they are duly compensated with taxpayers’ money to supposedly manage our governmental affairs. Sam, you can actually do your relatives a favor by productively defending them via whatever achievements they have done for our province. But then again, I suspect that you cannot for it’s none of your business in the first place; and, you yourself have become a transient to Southern Leyte who doesn’t have an ample grasp of the Mercado brothers’ modus operandi.

BTW, why don’t you really stop using other countries as references that have their own unique lifestyles and economies. Furthermore, stop telling others to migrate to other countries just because they don’t like the way the politicos run our government here! However they feel about our government system is absolutely none of your business; and, as far as I can remember, the Philippines is still a republic that purports “freedom of speech”. Mr. Samuel Mercado, at their own expense, they are just freely exercising their freedom of speech, Man! And, they are not even talking about who you are (yet)!!!

A lot of us came from lifestyles that were constantly challenged with the ever-changing economic conditions. Some of us came from poor or mediocre origins; unlike your well-off family tree. It might be easy for you to say, “I am going to Hawaii, or Denver, or somewhere else”, but most of us can’t even afford to leave the country in light of certain personal economic reasons. This is why they complain because they can feel, hear and see the “what’s-going-ons” in our local government today. They want to be able to improve their lives with whatever local socio-economics can offer. Do not forsake them, Man. Pity them instead. If you feel that are still a true Southern Leyteno, then perhaps you can start giving something back for the people – leave your unnecessary ranting aside please!

It is not a misplaced writing. A northwestern reader commented earlier on the high cancer rate in Portland, Oregon after he read about our suggestion to the people in Southern Leyte: that they should learn how the Scandinavian governments spend on their environmental concerns and governance of their
    countries.

Some contributors to this comment which is about the “Second face-off for 2010 polls” have used this particular news and “comment” as a forum to attack against other politicians including name calling. We asked them to provide the photos, videos and/or documentations of their gossips or false accusations.

That is not how “News Writing and Reporting” is being taught in Journalism and Mass Communication subjects. One cannot just write the “gossips” as if they are facts. Get the facts direct from the person or persons involved by asking them for an appointment and permission to interview!

You wrote: “…they are just freely exercising their freedom of speech, Man! And, they are not even talking about who you are (yet)!!!”

There is a very good editorial on accusing anyone without proofs in the current
online issue of Southern Leyte Times. We suggest that you read it to save time and space in this page.

Please read our responses by reading our web pages on and for Southern Leyte such as “Wanted: Developers, Investors & Retirees”, “Wanted: Hovercraft Transportation”, “Wanted: Museum & Multi-Purpose Center”, “Visit Southern Leyte” and few others.

We are not composed of one-man self-sustainable community project. But, if you care enough about our mision and goals for Southern Leyte, then you may write to one of our website email addresses.

i dont think the millennium understand what you trying to say daniel.
hes such a big retarded fellow.

    what an idiot.

  7. I believe I fully comprehend your response-comments, Mr. Samuel Mercado. Per my current affinity, I’d answer, “Loud and Clear”! Then I’ll continue to march…

I have to agree with what bruce just posted. You really missed my point! As talented as you assumably be, I am in total disbelief that from your own self-proclaimed pedestal, you refuse to level yourself to the mindset of others whom personal achievements may not be extensive as yours. (if you’d like, you may take that as a compliment for what it’s worth to you)

Be advised, your one-track minded self will just cause other commentators (may not be all) under any of the articles of this website to respond negatively to, vice positively perceiving, your viewpoints. But.. that’s your prerogative.

I’ve already read the article you pointed out and also visited the 7th Millennium website. I hate to disappoint you, Man! They are not typically for the “common people of Southern Leyte”. Having said that, I’d dare say now what bruce just posted…”i dont think the millennium understand what you trying to say….”

With your self-proclaimed stature, have you already given something viable back to the common people of Southern Leyte? I you have not, then be man and humble enough to admit it. I think we can respect that.

  11. I sincerely hope that Congressman Roger Mercado will not reinact his stupidity he did on Odong Saludo. I also hope he’s not that naive to emulate the Ampatuan case!

Before the eyes of the people who knew or witnessed the wretched and dispecable event, Mercado publicly proved his political crookedness and total disregard for common decency. That was something that the people will never forget!

  12. You wrote: “With your self-proclaimed stature, have you already given something viable back to the common people of Southern Leyte? I you have not, then be man and humble enough to admit it. I think we can respect that.”

Why concentrate your interest on a small province? Have you not studied the history why and how our Southern Leyte became a separate, but small province? Think and look back at our roots in history:

“Even before the Spaniards fell to the Americans on August 13, 1898, there already existed some kind of a “sub-province” in the southwestern part of Leyte consisting of the municipalities from Palompon to Hinunangan, with Maasin as the center.

“Maasin was the depository of cedula tax collections from Palompon to Hinunangan. This was administered by the office of the Administrado de Hacienda, equivalent to the Provincial Treasurer, a position under Secretario de Hacienda.

“There was also established in Maasin a Court of First Instance, then known as the Promoter Fiscal, where all minor administrative and other cases from Palompon to Hinunangan were heard and disposed of.

“However, due to change of sovereign powers, all the offices in Maasin except the Fiscal’s Office were abolished and reverted to Tacloban. This created a major problem because of the dearth of transportation, the difficulty in managing the affairs of government in Tacloban and the language barrier between the Cebuano-speaking South-westerners and the Waray Easterners. The division of Leyte into two provinces and the establishment of a separate government for the western towns of the island were then thought of as the only solution to these problems.”

Why not spend your time, including the guys who are supporting your cause in name calling the present administrators of our province, to have all the Cebuano-speaking in Leyte Island and its nearby smaller islands to sign a petition? To those who are power hundgry, why not go back to the old history?

As logical as they should have been in the first place, let the population in the entire Leyte islands decide to divide the districts into Cebuano and Waray-speaking provinces!

  13. Minor typo correction: Please change “power hundgry” to “power hungry”.

  14. OMG, I asked a simple question hoping I’d get a straight simple answer; but noooo… I got a rant of irrelevant blah-blah. Man, you’re really somehting else.

Why couldn’t you just say “No” if you have not; and, we would have respected that. I guess you’re too damn proud to get off your high horse of history spillage that doesn’t even closely respond to my question that you initially quoted in your spill. I hate to concur with other commentators here, but now I am really beginning to believe that you appear to have the A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Disorder) malady!

BTW, I don’t need you to partially tell me of the history of Southern Leyte as I am a lumad Southern Leyteno who grew up in the ghettos of the old market in Tunga-tunga. I may have been an illegitimate child, but I am proud to have roots that fought the Japanese in WWII. (Specifically, one great, great uncle of mine shot a Japanese sentry from the Our Lady of Assumption church’s bell tower. I bet you don’t even know who this great person was.)

Your plagiarized verbiage insults my intelligence.

  15. You probably do not know that when you state something with an open and close quotation, like what you just said “Your plagiarized verbiage insults my intelligence” that is standard writing, which this writer intentionally did not include the source which is from the official Southern Leyte website. Of course, we could have paraphrased the paragraphs, but we know that in English composition, it is very acceptable. (Consult your English teacher if you do not believe us.)

From experience in making comments in response to those who called negative names to this writer, they simply do not know that it is okay to provide links which are the equivalent of providing references as in writing a book, textbooks, etc.

Famous best-selling authors quote word for word from other authors too! They are standard operating procedures as long as you do not edit or delete any letter or number or alter the thought. It must be in the original to avoid taking the words out of context.

You are not the only one in Leyte and Southern Leyte whose relatives served in the wars!

Note: We suggest that a Forum Section is the right and proper place to whatever you have against anybody other than just make a comment on the news in this specific web page. grabe, wa juy mudaug nato dinhi sa atong mga bira-bira kay wa man juy usa nato dinhi na mutalaw, mudagan, unja ingnun na ba_ot (literallly/figure-atively)!

    ang issue dinhi “second face-off…”,

now, i think sa duha na pulitiko sa ibabaw sana dili na butaran nato para mahatagan ang uban ug chansa.

kahibawo ko na may mu-supak, may mo-pabor…then go, write about it (ajaw lang sila lisang-lisanga)

i won’t vote for oging, simply because if you put him there again at the congress everything would be like “balbakuwa na gi-init napud ug utro para sa sunod na bisita.” With oging back on his post is like turning the province into state of feudalism. y can’t we just get it! eudalism has no place in a democratic place.

i won’t vote for saludo simply because ” i am already done “saluting” him for his past accomplishments in the district during his terms (yup, he’s brilliant, he’s bold), and i have had enough of his “brouhaha”.

comments? well, anyone is free to shoot, este, say his comment, as long as it’s not below-the-belt.

but the irony here is that while we are ranting here, the pople we are talking about are dining in a posh place, happy and satisfied….while we….well, debating here.

“I sincerely hope that Congressman Roger Mercado will not reinact his stupidity he did on Odong Saludo. I also hope he’s not that naive to emulate the Ampatuan case!”

About a week ago, three (3) unidentified men wearing dark sunglasses and coats, and on board a black SUV went to a house where a cousin of the Rodens was residing. Residents in the area reported that the suspicious looking characters loitered in the vicinity of the house for more than four (4) hours, and kept inquiring on the whereabouts of the Roden brothers – Jeffrey J. Roden, who is running for Congressman and Jerome J. Roden, who is running for Governor.

The Rodens are not proxy candidates of the Mercados. For the Rodens who belong to a clan of achievers who are adamantly against corruption in government, that would be an intellectually, professionally, and morally insulting proposition.

  24. abe says:

  25. Our Soley says:

    @Daniel Espere:

A few days before the incident involving the suspicious looking characters who showed up at the residence of a cousin of the Roden brothers, a resident of Bontoc went to the same place and talked to an in-law of the Rodens. The resident, who worked as a maciador at the Sogod Cockpit, told the in-law: “Ingna na lang na si Jerome Roden nga iatras na lang ang paglansad sa pagka-gobernador kay dili gyud na siya kadaog.” Residents in the area identified the man as a very close colleague of the incumbent governor who is a known cockfighting aficionado. (Note: The location of the house is being kept undisclosed for security reasons)
