Maasin City (January 4) — The way it was raining non-stop here day and night on December 31, 2009, until midnight on New Year’s day, and most of the day on January 1, 2010, one would think nobody got hurt with the wet and subdued noisy celebration that welcomed the coming of another year.
But Dr. Joselito Trumata, the provincial Health Officer at the Salvacion Oppus Yniguez Memorial Provincial Hospital (SOYMPH), told PIA in a phone call this morning that based on their records there was one victim for the entire province of Southern Leyte.
This victim was treated for minor burns in the hand in the evening of December 31, said Dr. Trumata without giving further information, saying only the details can be had at the emergency room.
PIA called the emergency room, only to be told by three answering ladies, who passed the phone one after the other, that they were busy being a Monday they cannot give details.
Last year, Trumata said, there was zero casualty.
PAG-ASA had said the continuous rains which greeted the new year in these parts of the country were caused by a weather system called a cold front and inter-tropical convergence zone, or simply the meeting point of moist air that can cause rain-inducing clouds.
Elsewhere in Mindanao and Metro Manila, however, it was fine weather as attested by personal calls of this writer’s relatives who called to exchange well wishes and greetings at the precise moments when 2009 became 2010. (PIA-Southern Leyte)
