MAASIN CITY – Incessant rain did not deter hundreds of residents including several foreigners from watching the annual fluvial parade in honor of feast of Sto. Niño in the

City Sunday afternoon.

They were at the Maasin pier where the parade started and the city coastal areas dancing to the beat of Sinulog beat.

The fluvial parade, giant and sinulog dance competition has grown bigger this year, said a tourism official.

Naome Caube of the City tourism office said there were more participants this year compared to last year.

The prices though remained at P25,000 for first price, P10,000 and P7,000 in the banca, pumpboat and dance categories respectively.

Getting much attention from the contestants were the giant replicas of Michael Jackson and the pirate of the Carribean.

At the end of the fluvial parade, participants proceeded to the gym from the new terminal where the bancas and boat docked.

The sinulog festival continues till night with owners of icons of Sto. Niño which participated in the parade made stops different areas in the city for residents request to dance the symbol of child Jesus.

Earlier in city’s cathedral and several chapels, hundreds of icons of Sto. Niño and children were blessed by officiating priests after celebration of Sunday masses.

The city government has promised that the annual festivity will much bigger to attract tourists and boost the tourism industry in the city.

In San Ricardo, where a fluvial parade ended in tragic death of 15 people mostly children when their boat capsized because of overloading, Sto. Niño devotees just dance at the shorelines, said Maasin Coast Guard officer.

Petty Officer Michael Romero, said, only the owner of the boats and few relatives participated in the fluvial parade. “Senior devotees just prayed in the town’s shorelines.

    Maasin’s Sinulog celebration is indeed getting stonger. Despite Cebu City’s stornger and much bigger counterpart, Maasin held its own. Hope the Maasin City government will continue to support and spearhead this annual event in honor of the Holy Child. Congratulations!

    idungan sa cebu celebration, so you can attract more people to see it.
    just a suggestion.maybe two weeks before cebus. sinulogs. kindly post more pixs of maasins sinulos. thanks
