Gov. Mercado bares high-end development in Agas-Agas bridge

By Bong Pedalino

MAASIN CITY — The country’s tallest bridge will soon be installed with the country’s longest zip-line facility — and much more.

Aside from the kilometer-long air-borne slide thrill, which is a captive come-on for extreme adventure lovers, the vicinities surrounding Agas-Agas bridge in barangay Kahupian, Sogod, will have matching amenities like hotels, restaurants, even a gasoline station, to cater to the rest and relaxation needs of weary commuters and the travelling public, not just thrill seekers.

This was the futuristic vision shared by Gov. Damian Mercado in a casual chat this week with local media on the sidelines of welcoming the visitors from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

But first things first. Before this very exciting scenery can ever reach first base in actual development, the provincial government would secure a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), said Gov. Mercado.

DENR is the government custodian of the timberland areas around the panoramic view as far as the eyes can see in Agas-Agas, while the DPWH owns the existing peripheral buildings and structures all around.

Gov. Mercado said the proposed MOA would stipulate the province’s intent on developing further the place which may involve a turn-over of the site altogether.

He was optimistic this can be done, citing as example the long stretch of lonely highway somewhere in Luzon which is now dotted with resting and eating places.

As it is, Agas-Agas bridege had attracted quite a number of visitors and curious onlookers — and has continued to attract — ever since it was opened to traffic following a drive-through inauguration by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on August 9, 2009.

With Gov. Mercado’s plan, investors on tourism-related business should now be on their toes for a slice in the pie should the vision becomes a reality soon. (PIA-Southern Leyte)

at mamaklaray, first dont count the chicken while it is not yet hatched. second life is like a wheel, sometimes your on topsometimes your down, third too much confidence will kill a man, fourth , money can not buy everything, fifth, this is 2010 not 2007. I WOULD LIKE TO INFORM YOU THAT DURING THE 2007 ELECTION THE LERIAS WON BY A BIG MARGIN FROM PASAY TO TAGNIPA BUT IN THE MOUNTAIN AREA THE MERCADOS WON , WHY? BECAUSE OF TIKAS AND MONEY. but this coming 2010 may pohon, HOPEFULLY THE PEOPLE OF MAASIN MAGING WISE VOTER NA. I KNOW THIS WILL HAPPEN. GODBLESS THE ENTIRE PARTY OF MANA ROSETTE.

@Taga Maasin : I agree with your queries regarding the bridge but i dont agree when you say that …. you can bet your sweet behind that the bridge will eventually be a “White Elephant”. Again, I say I hope I am wrong!…

    Can you define White Elephant?

How can you say it will become another “White Elephant?” when it is very useful to travel to Tacloban the fastest way using So. Leyte’s Maharlika Highway. When we are still using the side of the mountain it was very dangerous but since it was the fastest way to travel Tacloban we use it and now that the bridge is there mo ingon ka nga white elephant? How come?

It is very useful for motorist and for business trades, making it a tourist attraction is a plus factor to Southern Leyte.

Some information on the contractor. I know its Kajima then one who is responsible of Mactan Bridge 2, I think they will not take the project if it will end up sub-standard.

Not all projects under the Roger Mercado’s helm are sub-standard, take a road trip going to Panaon Island, I’ll bet its the best in Region 8. The best road I travelled so far. From the tip of Northern Samar down to Southern Leyte. Only one bridge where you can feel that your passing a bridge the rest are perfect, usually when you reach on a bridge you can feel the connection between the road and the bridge but the contractor of Panaon Island they are very good.

    Italian-Thai Rocks. China Road sucks.

  9. mamaklaray says:

If GERALDO is running for Congressman then I will retract my previous comments that all politicians are cheaters. The only person who won’t buy votes. He is a good person to talk to though. Nakahuman ni sia ug Bachelor of Law or LLB.

    Go for Geraldo for Congressman!!!

  10. eping says:

  13. eping says:

    @nangandoy:

    nice to hear from you.

  14. nangandoy says:

@eping: I’m not really sure if that radio station already has live streaming capabilities like the ones of DZRH. Anyway, I’ll just email your suggestion (definitely a good one) to the Rodens and maybe they can do something about it. And nice chatting with you. Take care bai.
