Sogod, Southern Leyte — Structures like roads and bridges are very important in linking places as well as in the promotion of economic progress, Cong. Roger Mercado stressed at the auditorium in barangay San Miguel here Friday, Februar 5, saying that these projects are “investments for prosperity.”
Earlier, Gov. Damian Mercado emphasized the same idea, stressing that in the past a wooden bridge plank was always at the mercy of the elements during bad weather, so this should be replaced with a lasting one made of concrete to hasten movement of people and vehicles at any time.
The two provincial leaders spoke in ceremonies marking the groundbreaking of the new bridge that would span the old short-cut road traversing the Subang Daku river.
In territorial geography, the structure would link barangay San Miguel on the eastern side, and barangay Concepcion at the other end.
Rep. Mercado said that building a structure today will prove to be a cost-saving undertaking than building one in the future with the expected surge in the prices of construction materials such as steel bars and bags of cement.
This will also usher in as a step in the right direction for the future development of the province, as the infrastructure would certainly lure investors to come in with good passageways, he added.
At the junction by the side of the river, Msgr. Felix Paloma led the blessing shortly before the time capsule was lowered in the ground, with top officials in the province and Sogod Mayor Sheffered Tan taking turns in pouring sand as a dramatic gesture for the official start of the project.
In the closing remarks of the program, District Engineer Carlos Veloso said the project cost was P 144 Million for a 136 linear meters long bridge, to be implemented in 6 phases, the phase one of which has an appropriation of P 20 Million and will be completed in August this year.
Veloso said the new bridge would provide a shorter route to pacific and Panaon sides of the province, reduce transportation costs, and will offer a safer, convenient travel of the public. (PIA-Southern Leyte)
