So young, so promising

MUSING MAASIN

By Ronald O. Reyes

Today, I would like to entirely devote my space here to congratulate a young man by the name of Bryan Sadoguio and his group-Maasin Outdoor Organization (MOO)—for coming up with a very laudable move in an effort to provide hope to some of our less fortunate children in the city, improvement in the environmental condition of our fragile community,   and inspiration to those other young people who would like to make a difference in their young lives.

Bryan’s story is somewhat familiar to most of us — a person born with a silver spoon in his mouth; always got the best days of his existence; and suddenly, understood the wisdom of sharing his time, resources, and effort in helping people, especially hungry children and youths, also live in a clean and fun-filled environment.

Thus, the creation of Maasin Outdoor Organization –a SEC registered non-profit and non-political organization that is also willing to be on the forefront for socio-civic activities in the city, province, and hopefully, in the region.

Bryan shared that most of their members are outdoor people, youths, and young professionals alike (as he reasoned out that most of the outdoor people are environmentalists).   They are also open to anyone who is 18 years old above (below 18 must have parent/guardian consent) as long as they are going to join/participate outdoor events and render service activities on a monthly period (or at least randomly).

Outdoor activities include mountain climbing, camping, biking, hiking, and eco-sports such as adventure race, fun run, and marathon, among others. Meanwhile, service activities include tree planting, coastal clean-up, feeding, and other outreach programs.

Being a socio-civic group, they are also spearheading fund-raising activities like holding concerts, variety shows, bingo socials, etc., or even building a canteen for the said purpose.

For the record, the group had already hosted four feeding programs in Maasin’s remote villages, one coastal clean-up, and mangrove-planting in Macrohon since December last year. This February 6, they will have another feeding activity in Brgy. Sta. Rosa, Maasin.

Relative to this, the group also wishes to get voluntary contributions, supports, and donations for their other upcoming events: April 9–Concert for Mother Earth with Budoy (Junior Kilat) and Coolie Dread and the Microphone Commanders; June 9—Adventure Race (also serves as part of the opening salvo to a circuit of races in the region which will be covered by Living Asia TV channel).

With regards to adventure race, it can be recalled that Bryan’s group made every Maasinhon proud when they bagged the 2nd and 3rd places as first time participants in the Kauswagan Adventure Challenge in Palo, Leyte last year. Now, they are more than ready to introduce the same sports and recreations to the city and the province into a regular basis.

Bryan’s group, being a service-oriented organization, also calls the attention of every concerned individual to take part in calling the attention of those who are in the government position on their failure to provide necessary services to their  constituents, however in a peaceful and organized way. Thus, their activities can be a form of “protest” to government’s inadequacies and shortcomings. On the other hand, Bryan maintained that they can never do it alone– thus they need more support from the public to promote their cause.

When asked about what would make their organization “thrive” and “thick” in the socio-civic scene, Bryan maintained that their organization adhered to transparency and social responsibility in all their undertakings. More, they are very much willing to coordinate with other non-governmental/humanitarian organizations who are also espousing cause against poverty, inequality, violence, war and militarism, prejudice and oppression, and environmental destruction.

At 31, I believe others would think that Bryan’s efforts could be liken to an “angry young man”–“emotionally drained” due to the social ills in his midst—but I can prove you he is not. In his own words, he always believed that hope and change can still be initiated by anybody, anywhere. Yet, the big question is: Are you going to be part of it?

Thus, by coming out into the open and with their new calling, Bryan and his MOO can still find comfort in the blaring melody of Rage Against the Machine’s Guerilla radio: It has to start somewhere, it has to start sometime, what better place than here, what better time than now!

Yes, they are so young, so promising. They need our support.

  2. Friends,

Again (and hopefully for the last time, I beg), I wish everyone can set aside all those hostile feelings towards each other here. That is not the most decent, civilized, and orderly way to help the group ( though everybody really got the freedom to do what he likes to do on his own).

Also, this is not the best place to antagonize each other. We might as well join the army and fight those murderers-maniacs out there–society’s real enemies.

I understand people here (especially those who are afar) are interested about the group. Thus, its facebook account–maasin outdoororg–has been updated so one can read its developments and find the people behind the group.

Regrettably, however, some failed to maximize the use of all those contact details listed above to express their personal comments or to get first-hand information from the group.

Perhaps, it is on this manner that we tend to misunderstand, misinterpret, underestimate things.

Meanwhile, the group wished that they can have their own website soon; yet as of the moment, they settled with a facebook account because for them it can easily reach and attract more contacts (especially former highschool or college classmates, board mates, batch mates, associates, neighbors, acquaintances, and love ones).

I am not calling names. I am calling each one of us—human as we are, can we be a little humane or compassionate about this little misunderstanding ensued here.

It’s quite odd (though sometimes fascinating in some ocassions) to waste energy here in trying to coin those silly diatribes in our heads, then have it posted here, then wait for few minutes for a reply, then type again…then read again…then..then…

In closing, I still have to understand why we tend to be so disturbed and so distracted with name-callings/cat-calls when he have had comfortably cloaked ourselves on some screen-names?

All of us here are no longer children—no longer egoistic, no longer stone-cold, no longer vindictive, no longer easily-provoked.

There is indeed wisdom in growing old, and have self-restraint..

You said, “…In closing, I still have to understand why we tend to be so disturbed and so distracted with name-callings/cat-calls when he have had comfortably cloaked ourselves on some screen-names? ”

Uhhhh, I think you need to speak for yourself, Bay, my name is Daniel Espere – not cloaked to hide myself! Facebook is a good venue to broadcast personal or group agendas. However, it’s also a venue that will reinstate the ugliness of the streak of people in my past. In due time, I hope to live long enough to unregretably even out the unsettled personal score.

Oh BTW, I have been fighting REAL enemies in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Irag, Pakistan, Kuwait, Qatar, Somalia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, etc to ironically protect and bring about peace and safety for mankind. Please do continue to sleep well my friend. Got you covered.
