Election season increase in consumer spending

Maasin City (23 February) — Call it stating the obvious, but an official of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) has noted that the election period, as always, brings with it an increase in consumer spending, albeit artificial.

Florencio Aguillos, Board Secretary to the RTWPB, was referring to the legitimate income earned by workers through such fleeting assignments as pasting of posters not necessarily in areas designated by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) as common poster areas.

Workers in printing businesses involved in producing those campaign materials, along with others in the services sector, like food catering, can also earn, Aguilos noted.

Aguillos, who dropped by at the PIA office being formerly connected with the agency, was in the city last week to conduct productivity training seminars on small and medium enterprises as a way to promote the employees? and management?s productive output, both in the public and the private sector.

Among the inputs he usually shared are the 5S (sort, systematize, sweep, sanitize, self-discipline) in good housekeeping, an integrated approach to maximize available resources in the workplace at the same time instilling order and discipline.

The passing increase in income during the election season can at the very least spur the local economy into action, with the purchasing power of people already assured, Aguilos observed. (PIA-Southern Leyte)
